Academic Planning and the Learner-Centered Curriculum

Over the past five years, Michael G. Dolence and Associates has also worked with a number of clients to develop substantative approaches to achieving a more “learner-centered” curriculum. The result is a structured framework or architecture and approach for curriculum design, development, and deployment. The framework also provides a carefully detailed, structured approach to evaluating the curriculum (assessment and program review) from a strategic perspective. Seven interrelated and interlocking components shape the learner-centered curriculum framework, they include: (1) the populations served; (2) the objectives they seek; (3) provider models available; (4) learning theory, methods and principles appropriate to successful learning; (5) the overall curriculum architecture providing the full scope of programs and approaches; (6) specific curriculum configurations designed to meet specific learners’ needs; and finally (7) the services required by learners to meet their objectives. Through the structured approach, MGDA approaches academic master planning, curriculum design and evaluation, program review, and institutional strategic planning.
